Question

live in Las Vegas, needless to say the heat is brutal, was wondering what is the proper radiator to have ?? it has OE now and runs VERY hot, even with a secondary 14" thermostat controlled fan, a upgraded clutch fan, and just had the radiator completely removed and flushed. i have no idea how many core this is. and any help is appreciated. i would like to know how to determine a 3 core or a 4 core Radiator, also.   Thank You.

Hello,

I too am in Las Vegas so I know exactly what to do. Have you had this truck for a while-I mean is it a problem that has onset over time or has it been an ongoing probem?

I've got plenty of advice for you-just want a little background so I can give you the answer you need.

acutally this was an engine that was a "blueprinted" 350 so im told. and it had under 5k miles. and was removed from a 79' chevy and put into this 86' and since then it has run abit higher, then the other motor not sure why, but starting this summer it has just continued to rise. and after adding extra fan etc. still seems to not want to run cool. so im told to buy a new radiator. yet if i put the same one in wont it run also hot?

Hello,

What could be going on is that the radiator is sludged up and not getting the full flow capacity through it. Did you have it rodded out or just flushed-it is a normal occurence that the the tubes can be plugged up and wont flush out. I see this alot in older chevy trucks, a four core radiator is usually not necessary for a small block but a new three core would probably be sufficient. One thing I have run into several times is that no matter what you do the stock fan setup just does not do the trick here in vegas. We had a particular 89 suburban with a 350 that we got deeply involved with due to an AC problem, but we did a ton of testing on fan blade number and shape etc. The conclusion was that the OE fan was never going to move enough air. And the thermostatic function of the fan clutch if monitored does not hold up very long at these temperatures-even on a new and/or heavy duty fan clutch.

The fool proof solution to your problem if a new radiator still doesnt keep it cool enough is to scrap the whole fan clutch set up and install a flexalite electric fan. These fans move an amazing amount of air-if you are standing in front of the grill it will try to pull your shirt through the condenser trans cooler and all. If you are interested I can give you the exact one to buy-it will run you a couple hundred bucks but I can guarantee it will do the trick. I have had 100% success rate installing these fans on all types of older and newer chevy and ford trucks.

Hope this helps you out,
Thanks for using JA
