I have used Azodyl as an adjunct therapy for chronic renal failure in a number of patients.
Essentially, the product is composed of the "good bacteria" that help to rid the gut of toxins that can further worsen kidney disease. It is touted as being able to lower the blood values that are associated with kidney disease by something like 15- 20%. I don't believe I have seen such a significant reduction, but I have seen some improvement in kidney parameters after initiation of the Azodyl.

I typically use this product in conjunction with Epakitin, which is a powder that can be mixed into the food. The Epakitin helps to reduce blood phosphorus levels, which can increase in kidney disease as a result of the failing kidneys' inability to clear it. When used together, I feel like we are seeing an improved quality of life for these patients.

I have not seen very much in the way of side effects for either product. In one cat, we did see some digestive upset that resolved once we decreased the amount given. We were able to slowly increase back to the recommended dose and the cat had no further troubles.

I hope this information was helpful. Good luck to you.
