Question

I disconnected the MAF sensor and it still didn't start. Turn the key and the check oil light comes on and the engine turns but won't fire. I know, I know but I disconnected the neg. battery cable and that didn't work either. I poured more oil in the crankcase and left the battery cable off. If I could get it to start and get it home I will test the MAF and buy a code reader tonight. Suggestions?

Hi XXXXXX. Thank you for asking your question on Just Answer. It sounds like its not getting any fuel pressure or spark. You need to start with checking to see if the fuel pump is working and what the pressure is as well. Then pull a plug wire off and have a helper turn it over and see if the spark jumps to the plug. Can you here the fuel pump cycle when the key trurns on? When you turn the key on does the check engine light come on and go off when you crank it?

I haven't had any fuel issues although I haven't checked the pressure. I will as soon as I can get it home. New wires, new plugs and brand new battery. I can't hear the fuel pump. Not that I'd know what it sounds like. Check engine light does not come on at all. Just the check oil light. Lamont Gomery walked me thru the MAF sensor thing this morning.

Answer

The check engine light should come on with the key on and this could be the clue to your issue. This light would indacate your PCM (computer) isnt getting any power Check for B+ on the R wire at the IAC (idle air control) solenoid with the key on. If not B+, go to the PCM power relay in the power distribution box. Check relay and PD box for corrosion. Replace/repair as needed. The box is on the passenger side of the inner fender. You should also hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key on. Is in the fuel tank.

I just connected the battery and it didn't start. I pulled the fuel pump relay and the PCM relay and it started. Will leave it running. No engine light. Should I just replace both relays to be safe. Had alot of trouble with the alive memory and getting it to start 40 consecutive times in a row.

Accepted Answer

It likely the PCM relay, but while its running I would try and get it scanned and lets see if there are any codes in the system.
