Question

My friends 94 Camry has an ABS problem. Ater the ABS light comes on normally at startup it goes out. For the first couple minutes the light stays off but during braking there is a vibrating shuddering feeling in the front brakes (especially the left front). When the ABS light comes back on the shudder goes away. The shudder only occurs when the abs light is off. Trouble codes are 32, 34, and 35. Am I correct in thinking that the shudder (ABS light off) is caused by the ABS system trying to function properly? I assume then that when the ABS light comes on it defaults to non-ABS mode which is why the shudder goes away. Does that sound like a reasonable diagnosis? She thinks I have no clue what''s happening. Is she correct?

Hi XXXXXXXXX and welcome to JustAnswer,

No, you are correct on what you said. When the ABS light turns on, the ABS will be deactivated. Meaning, no more shuddder.

Do you know if the ABS system you have is a Bosch or Nippondenso? It should say so on the ABS unit under the hood. It's the component with mulitple steel brake lines coming off of it.

It's a nippondenso. Can it be deactivated temporarily until her shop can get to it?

Accepted Answer

The connectors to the ABS actuator can be unplugged to temporarily deactivated the system.
