Question

We have a calf with extremely swollen "knee" joints...and they fluctuate from one side to the other. The calf nurses, and follows the mother around, but the joints look terrible...almost like an extreme case of arthritis in humans. It spends a lot of time laying down...we thought at first that it might have been a snake bite, but it''s been about a month now. Any ideas on what it could be? Debbie in Perryville, AR

Hello,

There is an illness called joint ill, navel ill, navel joint ill, or septic arthritis that affects calves, lambs, foals and kids. It usually strikes when the babies are between several days old and four months old. It begins with an infection of the navel, which is easy to miss. Then it shows up as swollen joints.

Of course, I have no way to know for sure that is what you are seeing, but it does seem likely. The illness is similar in all species that it affects. You can read more about the illness in goats at this site:

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/90607.htm

And, in foals at this one:

You'll need a veterinarian to diagnose what is wrong with certainty. If it is joint ill, it will need to be treated aggressively to save the calf and preserve his ability to move normally. Strong antibiotics and sometimes hospitalization for further measures to be taken will be needed.

If you have more questions about this, just let me know. I hope your calf will be fine.
