Question

i have a male 5 yr old, neutered feline. a day ago he was having seizures and i brought him to a emergency clinic. They're first response was that it was FLV but he had a vaccination for FLV when he was small and he had a test 2 yrs ago and it came up negative. They wouldn't go further without the FLV test....so i took him home and brought him to my family vet. They did blood work and decided that it was transcient diatbetes....perhaps pancreatitis but from the tests they were leaning very much toward diabetes. they sent me home with a can of science diet a/d ....told me it was by prescription only and gave me a prescription for 6 more cans. Told me that in 2 to 3 days if he's still having seizures, that it might be pancreatitis and they should run more tests. i'm concerned b/c i can't find research on science diet a/d and i wasn't told what it is for and if it's really for diabetes or are they just selling me it b/c they an agreement with science diet? is science diet prescribed to transient dm?

Answer

A diet change is the recommend first course of action for diabetic cats. The blander foods are easier on their stomachs and likely because of the possibility of the pancreatitis he prescribed the bland food.

Here is a site that has answers to lots of questions about cats and diabetes. You can also discuss a substitute food with your vet if the prescription is too expensive for you.

Answer

A/D is what's called a "recovery food." It is used primarily when pets have heart disease, diabetes, or even anorexia. Vets use it because it's gentle on the stomach and pets really like it. They will eat it when they won't eat anything else. It also has very few fillers and is good for the diabetic pet.

Bland foods (like A/D) are great for cats with pancreatitis as well.

While it is a little expensive, it is definitely worth the price. Eukanuba makes an A/D as well so you might want to compare prices and see if you can get it cheaper. You should also keep in mind that prices can vary greatly between vets so you will want to shop around and get a good price.

Let me know if you don't understand or if you have more questions.
