Question

About three months ago I got married and my wife and step daughter moved into my condo. For the first couple of weeks everything was fine with my cat, Willy. He was a little skittish, but ok. Then my wife noticed that he had peed in a laundry basket next to his litter box. There appeared to be a little blood in it. Willy was otherwise fine and appeared to be in no distress. I pushed his belly area and around his genitals and there was no reaction at all...in fact, he was purring. Last night Willy urinated on my step-daughter''s bedroom chair. There was clearly blood in the urine. Again, no signs of discomfort at all.Prior to this NO problems at all.He is 6 years old, neutured and eats only dry food. I think he''s stressed by the new living arrangements or has a UTI.What do you think?

Hi there,

I am sorry Willy is having trouble. I think that the new additions to your family (congrats, by the way) have caused a change in your cats routine that may have stressed him out a little. I think that the inappropriate elimination you are seeing is in fact an infection, because of the obvious blood. Willy will need to see a vet tomorrow and be put on some antibiotics. Urinary tract infections are very, very uncomfortable and usually cats associate this discomfort with the litterbox. They urinate in other places in the hopes that it won't hurt so much. If untreated, urinary tract infections can progress to kidney infections or urinary blockages. These 2 conditions are life threatening and considered to be EMERGENCIES. Please see the following website for more information on UTI.

Please see the following website for more information on urinary blockage.

Because your kitty is male, he is at high risk for urinary blockage. If he tries to urinate and cannot pass any urine at all, he needs to seen an emergency vet IMMEDIATELY, and cannot wait. If he doesn't receive medical attention right away, he will die. If he does fine over night, he will need to see his regular vet in the morning for an exam and urinalysis, and may need antibiotics and pain medicines to start feeling better. He can get very, very sick if this is not treated. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. I hope your handsome man feels better soon!
