Question

We just had the front brake pads of our 1999 GMC Suburban replaced and now are experiencing the shaking of the steering wheel whenever we apply the brakes. Our mechanic said that the rotors need to be replaced but that they can''t replace the rotors without replacing the hubs(?) because the rotors are "frozen" or stuck. Does this make sense? We didn''t notice the shaking before we had new brake pads installed. Could the new pads make the shaking worse or even cause the shaking? Could they have damaged the rotors when trying and failing to remove them and instead just putting on new pads? Thanks!

Hi, even if the rotors are frozen to the hub, they should be able to get them off without too much effort. I dont know why they want to replace the hubs, unless they have excessive play in them. The shaking when you apply the brakes is most likely caused by the rotors being warped. Sometimes you may not feel pulsation as bad with old pads because they have worn together in a certain way. Now you put new pads on that are flat and square against a rotor that is not flat and you can get pulsation. They should be able to get the rotors off without needing hubs. A dealer has an on car lathe that will cut the rotors while they are still mounted to the hub, they dont have to come off at all, so it wouldnt matter if they were stuck on.
