Question

I was having electrical issues with my 2.5 ltr 2003 Z4, thought it might be the alternator then the battery kicked the bucket. The car operates fine I am stuck in Yuma, AZ and don't have access to my OBD2 reader, I know how to reset the service reminder and access the computer through the odometer, but the main issues will not reset under 21. They are as follows: turn signals are functional but don't indicate on the cluster, AC doesn't function (fan only-just what I need in 113 heat), radio clock & speed adjustment are non operational, passenger airbag indicator came on (propriatory BMW), the instrument cluster is not backlit when lights are turned on (it comes on after 3 minutes but does not adjust), the key in ignition gong does not work unless it comes on and wont stop unless reset under function 21 and the remote lock and trunk opening is delayed by 8 minutes from turning the key off. I also ran all the fuses anything I am overlooking? Will a propriatory reader reset these malfuntions ?

Hello, With all those systems malfunctioning at once. I don't think it is an issue of resetting anything. Seems like a power supply problem, like you already said possibly the alternator. When these systems see low power supply the set codes and start cutting back on power. For instance you car knows the charging system has a problem, it will not turn on the A/C. I think you need to get to a shop to have the charging system checked for low output or possible excessive ac current. You really need to know what codes are being set in all of the involved areas to really narrow down the problem (everything can't go bad at once). I don't know if this will do anything but you might want to try leaving the battery disconnected overnight to power down the systems and then reconnect it in the morning and see if anything starts working (like rebooting your PC). Good luck, Nick

Reply to tnick's Post: Thanks Nick, I think that sounds logical I am paid for school as a tranny transfer case certified tech and don't trust most dealerships unless they know my reputation and wont try to snow me. The power ac output is probably too high as when the old battery was going bad the systems worked intermittently then failed post replacement, I have a reman Bosch on order but its been 3 weeks and I am getting tired of waiting. Any suggested after market manufacturers of alternatoers you consider adiquate or superior for less than 500.00? BMW in Scottsdale want 580.00 for an oem- I miss my bay and tools at home at times like these, and no shop locally even has the leads to test the alt much less a program to read it...

Hello, I deal with a company called worldpac. They say the Bosch reman AL0703X 120 amp for part # 12 31 7 519 620 is $490.66 list and cost $168.85. If you know a shop who uses this company you should be able to get it under $500.00. Hope this helps
