The vehicle: BMW 2001 740il with 103,000 miles.
M62 TU engine. Production date: 6/2000
SES light went on, and one time after resetting codes the Engine Failsafe light went on
Idles very rough, missing. Exhaust smell. Sometimes hear a very shrill light whistle when first started.

Here are the DTC:
96 Fuel Injector, Cylinder #1
8C Map Controlled Thermostat Circuit/Control
A5 VANOS Output Stage, Cylinder #1-4
97 Fuel Injector, Cylinder #5
3E Misfire, Random/Multiple Cylinders
32 Misfire, Cylinder #1
33 Misfire, Cylinder #5
82 Drive-By-Wire Throttle Position Monitoring

What I have done:
Replaced spark plugs, replaced Fuel Filter, replaced all 4 O2 sensors
Sent Fuel injectors out to be cleaned and recalibrated (after getting the error)
Replaced right (passenger) side CPS.
Swapped coils between 1 and 4 and 5 and 8 spark plugs with no change.
Note I have the enginuity scantool with BMW enhancement and made pdf print outs of some

Hello, Thats alot of information. without being there it is hard to tell what is going on. I will try to steer you in the correct direction. The areas a would look in are thermostat map cooling circuit, crankcase ventilation valve on back of intake manifold, clogged exhaust, valve timing problem. Now I will explain each:

Sometimes on your vehicle when the map cooling circuit fails the connector that is part of the thermostat assembly shorts out and melts. This circuit is powered by a very important fuse in the ebox fuse carrier that supplies current to the throttle, DME, transmission controller etc.. I would change the thermostat because no matter the extend of the damage the thermostat is bad, it has a code. I have seen just the connector burn, I have seen the wire burn all the way back to the ebox.

Crankscase ventillation valve, this valve cause all types of problems, misfire fuel smells codes in different systems rough idle etc. It also make a whistle or humming noise especially when you shut off the car, or accelerate. To test you need to perform a crankcase pressure test.

Clogged exhaust, this can cause the misfire codes and rough idle, exhaust smell, but usually sets codes all on one side. so this is possible but less likely

Valve timing, You have a variable valve timing fault, this could be an actuator sticking causing a cam to be stuck in the advance position which would cause the idle to be rough and misfire, but the misfire would only be at idle. Sometimes that code is set because of a bad solenoid, dirt clogging the system, or binding actuator.

If you have any other questions please ask.

If this information was helpful please hit accept. Thanks, Nick

I approved the answer. Thanks. Sorry for the delay but I could not access my computer for a couple of days at home. I have been mostly at work. This weekend I will try some of your recommendations. I forgot to mention one thng in my question, and I don;t know if it will make any difference, but, At first I thought I had gotten a bad tank of Gas, because I had filled up in a crappy station in Chicago. So I ran some fuel system cleaner through the system, even though it is not recommended.

I also noted just before posting the messagae that when I had the MAF duct removed in order to get at the CPS on the right, I could see the throttle Vane(?) and it seemed to have some dark (burnt) material along the bottom where it met the hole. I was not sure if the gunk was preventing it from closing all the way or not. I did not want to force it open or anything so I just merrily put back the Duct and gave it another try. I also have some engine readings in pdf and spreadsheet formats from the Enginuity software, and a photo but was unsure if I could use attachments. There should be a way on the system to do that.

Answer

Hi, I got the picture of the throttle. There seems to be some carbon build up. You can clean that with a old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. That could be a possible cause of the code 82. I don't think that would be the cause of all the problems. Have you checked the map cooling circuit for a melted connector or burnt terminal ?

Reply to tnick's Post: I will be doing that today. I can really only work on it during the weekends, although I try during the week. I am also going to clean the throttle plate of the carbon build up and re-check the plugs and connections in case the carbon build up got bad just as a part of my idling with the misfires etc. I am going to check for that MAP circuit meltdown as you recommend, among some of the other possibilities that you mention. I will let you know what I find. Thanks -D.
