Question

we have a 9 year old bulldog. This morning he could had difficulty getting up from sleeping on the floor. When he tries to get up he cries & his body trembles. I placed a heating pad on his back & rubbed the muscles near his neck area. He eventually was able to go outside without crying; however, he is having the same problem again. In order to take him to the vet we have to be able to get him up but do not want to hurt him. what should we do?

Hi XXXXX,

If he has a crate he should be moved in the crate. If there is no crate you can pad a piece of hardwood and lay him on that. You may need a belt or two to help hold him in place. To help him get up you can put long towels under the belly, near the front legs and near the groin area, then use the ends of the towels to lift him as if he had a sling around him. (heres a picture of pet sling) http://www.scoutshouse.com/store/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=218&zenid=3nhouvrovln8lksbntvjhkhen1

Does the problem seem to be in the neck or lower spine?

Is he still having problems getting up?

Have you tried giving him plain aspirin? (not tylenol or Ibuprofen)
