Question

I have a 1994 or5 yamaha 85 that will shut down to an idle under hard running 5600rpm. The buzzer will sound and the engine will run roughly for about 3-4 minutes and then when the buzzer shuts off, it will run great until the next shut down. At 4200, my normal running speed every thing is fine. The water pump is new and pumps like a race horse... I pulled the temp sending unit to test. I dont know what temp it is supposed to shut down at... Help or is there something else to look at?

Hello.. I would check the thermostat and poppit valve for proper operation. If poppit has debris or sticking it will cause water to exit block before completely cooling ,thus causing buzzer and safe mode. see attached. Thanks!!!

I replaced the thermostat unit recently because it would not close and let the temp of the water rise... As I said, I would like to troubleshoot the temp sending unit by submerging it in hot water to determine what temp it will short and shut down the motor... what temp should it clost the circuit?

Answer

Hello. From the spec's I have it should be in the 122 -158 degree range.

Reply to Pappy's Sales and Service's Post: Sorry bout the wrong info on the thermostat, I dodn/t replace the thermost because there wasnt one there. The water would not heat up in the engine and tattletale water was always cold. I had no problem without the thermostat. The problem started when I placed a new thermostat in the motor. What should I look for concerning the poppet valve?

Answer

Hello. Check that spring is not broken, grommet is in place, not stuck open , and free to move in and out. Also is is motor inbrackish water? If so the water jacket may be partially blocked, which I would remove and clean...
