Question

my apartment lease ends july 28, 2008 and I just informed the property management that I am not renewing. The management says I must give them a 60 day notice. I am a college student and have found another place to live, but was unaware I had to give notice. Is it not the onus or responsibility for determining lease renewals the property manager?

Accepted Answer

Dear XXXXXXXXX - You need to read you lease and see what language there is regarding renewals. Abiding by the terms of the lease is the responsibility of both management and tenant. If you, as a tenant, had a duty to give a 60 day notice then it would be your responsibility to do so.

Landlords typically need to know if a unit is going to be vacated so they can start the process or re-letting the property. If you simply move at the end of your lease without notice then the landlord would most likely lose at least a month's rent trying to obtain a new tenant.
