Question

My husband has been complaining of being exhausted. He said his arms hurt but now they are just weak. It concerned him so much that he started to excerise with weights again but had to stop. Now he wakes up with leg cramps. he falls asleep everywhere. He said lately when he walks he feels like he has wobbly legs and almost makes him feel dizzy because of it.

He will be 58 in November.
He had hi blood pressure at one time. When I first met him he had severe migraines but they went away. He gets them every once in a while now.
He is on no medications except vitamins.
He has always been a very active person - meaning he could never sit still. He had to always be cutting grass or trimming something.
not sure the last time he saw a doctor but he has not seen one for these symptoms.

Accepted Answer

There are a number of possible causes for these symptoms including hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and heart problems.

I would STRONGLY advise him to see his primary care physician ASAP to get examined and have some tests run.

Reply to Family Physician's Post: I can understand the thyroid but how are these symptoms associated to the heart? Why would weak legs and arms and tiredness be connected to the heart?

Answer

This can occur when the cardiac output drops (the pumping ability of the heart) is inadequate to supply enough blood supply to the muscles. It is not my first thought, but without examing him it is impossible to exclude this.
