Question

My dog bit off and swallowed the top of a toothbrush when I was brushing his teeth. This was 50 hours ago - and it has not yet appeared in his feces. How long should I wait without worrying? He eats a dry kibble prescription diet for allergies (Hills z/d), he is acting normally.

Hello:

Honestly, it should have passed by now and it is quite possible that it was missed. Symptoms of an obstruction of the GI tract are vomiting, refusal of food and water, constipation, severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever over 103 and lethargy. You can add a couple of teaspoons of plain canned pumpkin to be used for its fiber content to move things along in his bowels (not too much...you don't want diarrhea and too little can cause constipation, but 2 or 3 teaspoons for you little guy should suffice). Providing he is acting normally at this point, I would wait and see if he develops any symptoms. Good luck and hope all goes well :)
