Question

I have a 5 year-old (rescued) greyhound bitch. Periodically she will pass vaying amounts of urine in the house. Is this a fact of her life that I must live with, or could it be treatable?

Info Request

Is she spayed?

How often does this happen say in a week or in a month?

Is there ever an increase in thirst?

Has any testing been performed?

Does this happen when she is laying down or just after getting up?

Thank you

She was spayed before I received her from the kennels.
She passes urine on average every couple of weeks (+/-)
Sometimes she is thirsty at night after her walk
I have not had her tested
She mostly urinates when I am not around (but in the house), so cannot say

Thank you

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have her urine tested to rule out a bladder infection as a possible cause. In most cases with bladder infections the urine is a constant issue but not when there may be bladder stones involved so it just wouldn't be a bad idea to have this checked out. Urinary incontinence is also an issue with spayed females and can be hormone responsive. If the urine tests clean then you may want to start her on a trial of Proin to see if it responds. If there is a response then this may be an issue of urinary incontinence.

You mention that she drinks a lot especially after exercise. This can be normal but it is also something that you can predict and be sure to get her outside a little more frequently if this occurs. However, if she is drinking more than usual all the time then definitely have that urinalysis performed and bloodwork to rule out any underlying illness like Addison's disease, Cushing's disease, kidney disease, or hypothyroidism as possible causes for her symptoms.

I don't think we should head toward the dealing with it part until all physical issues are ruled out first. Once all physical is ruled out I do suggest considering crate training as a form of retraining her not to urinate in the house. Most dogs will not relieve themselves in their cabins. This would be a great way to initiate retraining and start over from scratch. By this I mean train her as if she were a puppy. Outside first thing in the morning, after a nap, after eating, etc. She will get it greyhounds actually can be pretty smart.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.
