Question

Two days ago I had a 4 rail horse fence installed on my farm (1,000 feet). It is the third paddock to be installed on the same property. The wood on the first two were beautiful when installed and still are. The wood on this third paddock was so full of black mold, I couldn't believe they used it at all. Having been away for a few hours, I didn't see this until it was finished and the workers were packing to leave. Of course, I was appalled. This is a new farm - brand new house, brand new barn, and two beautiful paddocks. Then this one was installed.

It's been two days, and although it is not as black as it was, it is still very unsightly and not the addition I wanted to my beautiful new farm.

My question is whether the wood will dry, the mold disappear, and the fencing (which is close in proximity to the first two paddocks) will look as beautiful as the others. I was told by the fencing rep that it would.

Thanks

Answer

Hello XXXXXX XXXXXX,

Welcome to Just Answer.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

I wouldn't worry about it. Wood contains moisture and if stored in a dark area, it will grow mildew on it, which is what you are seeing. As long it is in a sunny area now and has the chance to dry out, the mildew will eventually disappear. You can speed up the process by spraying a mildew cleaner or a little bit of bleach. Let sit for a few minutes and then wash thoroughly with water. Do not use these products if they may effect the horses though, and just let time take care of it.

Is there a difference between mold and mildew?

Accepted Answer

Mold and mildew have many similar characteristics, but they are different types of fungi, and are often different in color and texture. Mold and mildew are often mentioned together as they can both grow in many of the same moist and warm locations. However, mildew is often found more often than mold in showers, paper and fabrics and mold is usually found more often than mildew in foods. They can sometimes be difficult to tell apart as they both spread out from spores. Mold is often black, green, red or blue in color while mildew is usually gray or white.
