Question

Orea is an Aussie/Border Collie mix and has been shaking her head excessively. I have examined her ears and they look clean. Any other possibilities of why she is doing this?

Answer

It may be possible that she is having an allergic response to something. In this case you can give her benedryl at a dose of 1mg per pound. However, looking into the ears without special instrumentation does not rule out an inner ear infection. Most times the infection is much deeper within the ear then the naked eye can see. If the head shaking continues then a trip to the vet would be recommended check the ear and start antibiotics if infection is present.

Reply to Theresa's Post: We have moved to a much wetter environment recently and I was thinking that might have something to do with it. she is used to a very dry climate with little insect interaction. there are lots of bugs here. She keeps scratching at her ear too. Could she have been bitten and is having an alllergic eaction? I don't have Benadryl. Is there anything else I could try?

Answer

Preferably you should go to the store and pick up the benedryl. If not there are a couple of other antihistamines but you would need to let me know what you have:

hydroxyzine (atarax)

chlorpheniramine (chlortrimeton)

zyrtec

claritin

Reply to Theresa's Post: I don't have any antihistamines but my neighbor might have Benadryl. How oftern should she get it? Twice a day?

Accepted Answer

The dosage is 1mg per pound up to three times daily. At least twice should help if this is caused by allergies or an allergic reaction.
