Question

There was an approximately 4" tubular black worm that looked like a piece of string in our cats water bowl. What could it be?

There are so many different types of worms that it would be hard to give you a name. It could be a hookworm, tapworm, roundworm...

I suggest that you take a stool sample to your vet tomorrow to have it analyzed to rule out a parasite problem. They will give you an appropriate dewormer.
