2001 Chevy Monte Carlo SS, 91k miles. Was getting hessitation on acceleration, noticable around 2200 and under load. Had an EGR code a while ago, change EGR vale and cleared code seemed better. Hessitation came back, seems worse, no codes at all. Changed plugs and fuel filter, test drove it. Seemed a little better, then on hard accelleration, it started to break up and pop, like a backfire possible? let off gas and then it settled down but sounded different. Looked under hood and the air injector valve was blown apart and melted (AC delco part XXX-XXXX) Will change this as it is destroyed. Question, what would cause this? A clogged catalitic converter? What is causing the hesitation? ANd why no trouble codes being set?

Optional Information:
2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 3.8L V6

Already Tried:
spark plugs, fuel filter EGR valve, air filter

yes - this sounds most definately like a clogged catalytic converter...an easy way to verify is to remove the oxygen sensor in front of the convertor ...if power comes back it is a dead givaway to a clogged catalytic converter...but by the rest of your explanation i would say it was even without the further verification - please remember to use the green accept button - thanks - let me know if you need any further assistance

Reply to Kevin's Post: Would I have to change anything other thant the air valve that blew apart? I assume that it backfired and that was the point of least resistance?

It's the air injection check valve, by the firewall center of engine next to fuel lines here is a picture of it on acdelo web page

when the misfires happened it was under load and it seemed that the car had little power. It was around 3800-4000 when it started missing and sputtering. I pulled over after that and was looking for a glowing converter or exhaust pipes. I noticed the blown valve when I came home. when running I feel air pressure from the hole in the top of the valve.

if you go start it now ... will it immediately have little to no power...if so please remove the sensor and let me know if it picks up ...don't worry about the valve first/now - please remember to use the green accept button - thanks - let me know if you need any further assistance

I will try that tomorrow. If I answer yes, can I still follow up, or do you have to wait for me to try the removal of the o2 sensor?
