Question

July 5 08 -Jenny is my 9 yr dachshund. Since last Saturday (july 5)she yelps when I try to pick her up -even delicately...I have trying to figure out what is wrong. Maybe the right shoulder blade (but could be neck). She avoids putting too much weight on the right paw, but she still uses it.
She limps slightly when she walks. She yelps a little if she has to bring her head down to pick some food up from the floor. (She also only lifts it up to a certain angle.) I have lifted her feeding bowls. She does not run around but has a good apetite, and relatively good spirits. When she went down with IVDD in September 07 her problem was in the back - L5/L6. (She was treated conservatively at the time. Physio, rest etc but no formal crating.)— July 7, 08 (after visit to vet) - vet took xrays of front paws and shoulders (could see spinal cord slightly..DOES NOT FIT

I highly suggest that your vet retake the xrays to include the neck. If she has IVDD it can affect her back and neck and this time her neck appears to be affected. I highly recommend at least getting her started on an anti inflammatory and cage rest. The fact that this is bothering her down her front legs tells me that the condition is more advanced then she is letting you believe. It may not be a bad idea to visit the neurologist or have an MRI performed if you are up for that expense. If she develops stiffness in the front legs, inability to move both front and back legs, or increased pain then a trip to the vet needs to be made immediately. Time is of essence with this condition because the longer one waits the less likely chance she will have a complete recovery.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.

hello theresa - thank you for that. I went to my regular vet and we think it is ivdd but not too bad. She is on steroids andmuscular relaxant for approx 8 days +8 days. She is better - not worse. I don't want to do the MRI or CT for time being because I want to avoid operation. If necessary _ I will do it. Whatever it takes...I am also crating her as much as I can - she hates as she is not used to it. Thank you for your help. Christina
