Question

my 3 year old male goldendoodle has chronic inflammation in one ear. I clean both ears and pluck the hair from the ears regularly. But, now the inflamed ear has chunks of a black tar-like substance. Its obviously bothering him because he is shaking his head constantly. I am will take him to the vet if I have to, but his first experience 2 years ago with the vet caused more harm at the time. He had an allergic reaction to ear ointment and prednisone created another set of problems. If I can treat this with OTC or natural home remedies I would prefer to.

Answer

HI XXXXXXXX,

If there is a black discharge then it may be ear mites and for that you would need medication to kill the mites as they can spread to other parts of the body and other animals . I understand that the dog had problems the last time the vet worked on the ears and if you mention the problems he had and that you don't want him to take certain meds . Prednisone should not be needed for ear mites. Here is more on the treatment of ear mites. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/ear-mites-in-dogs/page4.aspx
