Question

My husband paid me £5225 at the end of the tax year for some secretarial work that I had done for him. Would the tax office allow this to cover a period of 7 months?

Answer

Dear bonza,

The inland revenue will not allow this to income averaged folling forward into the next tax year.

It has to be counted as your income for the tax year in which it was actually paid.

I probably didn't phrase my question correctly. What I meant was, is £5225 a reasonable amount to expect to be paid for just 7 months work, as I did not work the whole tax year, just from September to End March or would they querey this?

Info Request

dear bonza,

This depends on how many days you worked.

Can you tell me how many days, count every 8 hour period as days?

And I assume this was part time delivery of services?

Yes, it is part time work. I'd guess that it would work out at about 21 days minimum, but probably a little more. That would work out at £34 per hour, is that too much?

Accepted Answer

The average secretary or personal assisstant salary in the UK is 18,000 GBP.

However, the same type work doen by an executive assistance is: £32,000 - £42,000

Based on this, I think your salary is about right.

normally temporary secretaries only get about 15 GBP per hour for temporary part time work.

However I would not think your wage is too much, as you seem have been paid a lump sum, and he could say you were or are his executive assisstant.
