Answer

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification.
The main action of Nitroglycerin Injection is relaxation of vascular smooth muscle, thus leading to a dilatation of peripheral arteries and more importantly the veins.
The half life of nitroglycerine drip is just 3 minutes, and it is metabolized in the RBCs , the blood vessel wall and the liver.
Given the small half life, an infusion is needed continuously for persistent effect.
However on continuing the infusion for more than 48 hours, tolerance to the effect of NTG develops.
On the other hand, even a 12 hour break during an infusion can re-activate the effect of NTG,

I was looking more for how you feel after the nitroglycerin is stopped. My husband who is diabetic was put on it while in the ER for blood pressure and because they thought he was having heart attack. They never checked his blood sugars while on the nitroglycerin drip. He developed the usual headache and a very dry outh. They refused to stop the drip. It was determined to not be a heart attack but reflux. The next day he hurt very badly in every joint and had a horrendous headache. He ran a fever of 101.9. I was just needing to find out if these side effects are normal. Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for clarifying what you wanted to know,
The effects that you are describing, especially the fever and body pains are NOT likely to be the NTG drip,
Fever is likely to be due to some other inflammatory cause like a mild FLU like illness that can explain the other symptoms too,
NTG does not cause fever, and its effect cannot last for days after it is stopped,
The only thing that can be quite likely due to the NTG is the headache,
