Question

My yorkie (11mos old, 5.7 lbs) has had diarrhea since Thursday. I took him to the Vet on Saturday and he gave him a shot of antibiotics & 12cc of Barium to coat his stomach. He's been on Pedialyte & baby food since then. He had a couple of semi soft stools, so both times I tried to give him a lil of his regular soft food with the baby food and both times, shortly there after, he had diarrhhea again. I called the Vet this morning and he said to give him only Pedialyte today & maybe some chicken broth tonight, if he has not vomitted or had diarrhhea for the rest of the day. He is not lethargic. He has his appetite and is playful. However, he runs out of energy earlier in the evening, probably because he doesn't have much in his stomach. Any ideas on what could be wrong with him? The Vet seems to think he might have a bug of some sort and with rest & time he will be back to normal. Please Help!~

Answer

Did the vet check a stool sample? this could be a protozoan parasite such as coccidia, giardia, or even campylobacter (especially if he gets lunch meat treats sometimes).
I've had good luck with my dogs being treated using Flagyl (Metronidazole) for non specific diarrhea problems like this.
Don't offer his regular food until this is resolved baby food works for a bland diet but make sure it has no onion in it. You can mix up your own bland diet using 1/3 meat to 2/3 cooked rice. Boil the meat (hamburger or chicken) and skim off all fat (chilling the broth helps with that) and then mix in with the rice to make small meals for your dog.
Hope this helps you!
