Question

I have a 1999 Yamaha WaveRunner XL 1200 X.

Two days ago it started to have trouble starting. It didn''t want to idle it would just start and stall. If you are quick on the gas you could get it going and once past slow speed it was fine.

I took it for long run yesterday and first started to notice that it seemed sluggish at anything under half throttle as if it was running on two of three cylinders. Once past half throttle it would take off and perform normally. As the cruise went on it seemed to be getting gradually worse. After 45 minutes of cruising slow and fast, I went to slow down and it stalled with a clunk at about 1200 rpm before reaching idle. There were never any warning signals to indicate anything was wrong.

From that point on it will not turn over. You push the starter and you just hear a click as if the starter motor is straining to start but the battery is weak. We tried to jumpstart it but still the same thing. Some of the battery cells were low on water, so we filled them. We charged the battery overnight but still just click when the starter motor engages.

I thought something might''ve gotten twisted around the impeller or driveshaft, but it seems clean. I pulled the plugs and they seem normal, all of them look the same.

What do you suggest?

Thanks Michael

Hello. What you describe doesn't sound good. I would remove the plugs and see if the engine will turn over without plugs. If it doesn't, or if it sounds "wrong", I would have a competent mechanic check it out - it sounds like you could have some internal damage. Even if your battery was low, I would have expected it to turn over with a jump, so that is a bad sign. Check it without the plugs and see what happens.

I pulled the plug's but nothing changed. The click when I push starter button comes from the black electrical control box not the engine. Not sure where the starter motor is.

If the engine seized, I would think it would have felt abnormally hot and smelled. The alarm system should have warned of this long before it happened. Is there any other way to correct the motor over?

Answer

The sound is probably from the starter solenoid, which is a switch that sends power to the starter motor. If it won;t turn over without plugs in, then you have a serious mechanical problem and really need to have a qualified mechanic take a look.
