Question

I have a Female that I have been working really hard getting ready for a show. She runs 3-6 miles and swims 8-10 mins. a day. She has now developed swollen mammary glands. I have cut her food down to 1/2 cup once daily and she gets .25 K-9 Super Fuel. I also have been putting on her belly canpher. Is there any shot or anything I can do to get her belly back tight?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXXX,
How old is your dog?
I am assuming, since you show her, that she is intact....When was her last heat?
Are all of her mammary glands swollen, or just one?

Your dog most likely has a condition called pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy). This syndrome is characterized by a display of maternal behavior and physical signs of pregnancy in middle to late diestrus of a nonpregnant bitch. After a female dog ovulates, she will develop a functioning corpus luteum and produce high progesterone levels, whether she is pregnant or not. Dogs with false pregnancy can show abdominal distention and mammary enlargement with secretion of a brownish serous fluid or milk (not all dogs will actually produce any milk). Some dogs will have vomiting, depression and anorexia. Many of them show behavior changes associated with pregnancy such as nesting behavior, mothering activity, restlessness and self-nursing.
It is recommended that bitches with suspected false pregnancy have an examination and an abdominal X-ray to rule out true pregnancy and pyometra (an infection of the uterus). Treatment for false pregnancy is usually unnecessary and the signs eventually dissipate. There is no association between false pregnancy and reproductive abnormalities. There are drugs that your veterinarian can prescribe to stop the mammary enlargement and lactation if you need to get her back in show condition.
I hope that this information is of help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with your dog. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

What kind of drugs?

Posted by Dr. K 509 days and 7 hours ago.

Answer

The drugs that vets most commonly use to do this are:

Bromocriptine mesylate--given orally for 5 days
or
Cabergoline--given orally for 5-7 days

**both of these can cause a pregnant animal to abort...so they are never to be given without a thorough veterinary physical examination. They also can both have side effects, so a dog must be under veterinary care to have these administered.

I hope that this helps you out,

I have some Megestrol Acetate tabs 20 mg. Are any of these drugs the same just different names???

Posted by Dr. K 509 days and 7 hours ago.

Answer

No Megestrol Acetate is not the same as either of these drugs. This is not a preferred treatment for this as megestrol can also cause mammary hyperplasia (which is what you are trying to correct in the first place), pyometra (severe infection of the uterus), diabets, increased appetite, weight gain, and atrophy of the adrenal cortex (which can cause even further problems). Also, when this was attempted as a drug for treating this problem, many dogs were found to have the pseudopregnancy reoccur, right after the treatment was stopped. Therefore, this is not generally recommended.

If getting her back in shape for the show is very important to you, then your best bet is to go see the veterinarian for the preferred treatment.
