Question

Three weeks ago my 10 year old JRT, 22 lbs ate several pieces of trident gum containing xylitol. We will have her blood test results soon but we are worried that she will have permanent damage or die. Since she's survived three weeks with one symptom, seizures, what are her chances of recovery?

Hi there Cheryl -

I have replied to this post - see below:

Hi there Cheryl,

Thank you for your question regarding your Jack Russell Terrior and the xylitol toxicity that has occured! I am sure you Vets are doing all they can for your girl and this is imperitive in cases of xylitol toxicity as supportive care is key to survivability. The progonosis for your girl depends on the severity of the signs she is currently showing and the bloodwork that your Vets will have in front of them. The prognosis is dramatically better for dogs who have not developed a coagulopathy. In the dogs who develop elevated ALT, TBILI, and coagulopathy, the survival rate is <30%.

I think that as long as the coagulopathy doesn't develop, your girl may do well. Most of the dogs who die acutely from xylitol hepatic failure seem to die secondary to hemmorhagic shock from their coagulopathy. Try not to panic, your Vet's are doing all they can with the management of your girl and her current state and I would have faith in their management of her case.

Please do keep me up to date with her progress. If the Vets seem to think her bloodwork is coming right and she does not have a coagulopathy she has much higher chances of making it through this. The seizures should also decrease to an eventual stop once the hypoglycaemia has been corrected.

Best of luck with your girl and my thoughts are with you! Please keep in touch.
