Question

My Belgian Shepard has a large fat lump in the middle of his groin. It''s is about the size of a small orange . He is about 10 years old and in good health otherwise. My Vet has said an operation is in order to remove it. I cannot afford the approximate $1200. My question is why can''t the lump simply be drained with a local anesthetic , or can liposuction be done on dogs ?

Answer

The problem with fatty tumors is that they aren't liquid so draining them isn't possible. Also trying to use a local anesthetic on a patient that you can't make be still during the entire thing is not only dangerous for the animal but also they aren't going to lay there for the procedure. The tumor is usually encapsulated and unless there are major blood vessels going thru it, it is not an extremely difficult procedure where it is located. If it isn't causing him any problems or becoming irritated on the skin then leaving it alone may be an option. The problem with leaving it is that it could grow larger and become more difficult to remove if done later. Liposuction may be something that could be done but haven't heard of anyone doing it yet. It would also require a general anesthesia and would probably cost much more to have done. Again different techniques for different species. As long as your vet knows it is a fatty tumor and not something else to be concerned with you may be able to put off the surgery for a little while and save the money to have the procedure done.
