Question

My german shep had 9 AKC pups...I currently had 3 left here at home with me; one of the three left yesterday to his new home at 9 weeks old. NONE of the pups has been sick at all, except the one that left yesterday had some loose stools a couple of days before pick up. Since yesterday I have now received news from his new family that he was taken to vet today and has bloody diarrhea. His PARVO test was negative. His parasite test was negative. They say now he may die and is lethargic, as well. They are at a loss for what he could have possibly ingested. I noticed no symptoms other than a couple of loose stools before he left my home which I informed them about. I have racked my brain about this. Any information that would cause bloody diarrhea besides Parvo or parasites in a puppy that was raised totally in the house, only around all the other WELL puppies, and their mom, dad and big brother would be appreciated so I can try to help figure this out with them. They were all fed Purina Puppy Chow. They had snacks of hartz rawhide hickory beef sticks. They had ol roy puppy biscuit treats. They always had plenty of fresh water. They lived in their own separate enclosure/apt about 10' x 10' in the house made of wood/screen/2 x 4's. They had a blanket, sheet and always newspapers for clean ups for these past 9 weeks. at 6 wks they had their first VET shots and VET worming, and even the vet told me "quote...I cannot find one single thing wrong with any of these puppies at all." and that "I was selling them too cheaply at 350 and should have started at 500" and that "they were all in excellent condition and excellent health". the pups were only outside very short periods on regular grass in my front yard for viewing about 4 times. They have had roam of house on occasions but this has always been as supervised as possible. I am at a loss as to anything he could have ingested here. He was taken home Sunday, as I held him for about 3 weeks while the family prepaed for him and took vacation. They have horses, pigs, ducks, cats and another GSD that stays outside. He was eating well, drinking well and just as rowdy and energetic and playful as the 2 others I am babysitting til 4th july when he left here Sunday, and then by Monday his new owner has told me he is about to die. ?? I am not understanding. Even the other 2 pups are just as usual this morning with formed BM's.

Hi XXXXXX,

Protozoan infections such as coccidia and giardia can cause bloody diarrhea. Information on coccidia
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1622&articleid=727
Symptoms are diarrhea which could be mild or severe depending on how infected they are. If severe there may be blood and mucous along with vomiting, loss of appetite leading to dehydration.
Information on giardia
http://www.missionmedvet.com/encyclopedia/giardia_canine.htm
Symptoms of giardia are diarrhea with possible terrible smell, mucousy stool and sometimes bouts of vomiting.

Other causes could be anal growths, infected anal glands and inflammation within the large intestine. You can read about the various cause of red blood in the stool here:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/hematochezia-blood-in-stool-in-dogs/page1.aspx

The following sites go over testing for coccidia and giardia.
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=739
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_coccidia.html

Rawhides are not considered safe for puppies and dogs anymore and can cause intestinal obstructions which you can read about here:

With a young German Shepherd that has chronic diarrhea it's important to check for exocrine pancreatic insufficency (EPI).   German Shepherd Dogs are prone to a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). It's fairly common in GSDs. It does involve the pancreas not working proper.y and as a result food is not broken down and not absorbed well. There is no clear reason why the pancreas atrophy, but it is believed to be hereditary in GSD's.

There is a blood test called Trypsin-like Immunoreactivity (TLI) that can be used to diagnose EPI as dogs with EPI have low TLI levels. Treatment will be a low fat and fiber diet and a pancreatic enzyme powder mixed in the food to aid in digestion.   Most dogs will need treatment for life and sometimes have a bacterial infection as well and need treatment with an antibiotic for a week or so as well. You can read more about this here:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/exocrine-pancreatic-insufficiency-in-dogs-epi/page1.aspx

I hope you find this information helpful.
