Question

I have two cats about 2 years old. Not brother & sister. Sammy, the male, has an angry management problem. It started last summer when I started feeding a stray. He became very upset, jumped on my leg & bit me when he smelled the cat on my leg. He would stand in front of the door so I couldn''t go out to feed him. That was the first time. I did find a good home for the stray. Sammy can go months without a problem. Last week I went on vacation. I had an inhouse pet sitter. When I got home he was very loving. Then on Wednesday he was sitting in the window & smelled something. I was watching him. He was shaking all over. He then attached my other cat (Amanda). She is a very loving kitty. I screamed for him to stop. He did, then started coming for me. He was going after Amanda off & on for a couple of days. If I caught him and told him ''NO SAMMY'' repeatedly, then he would stop, but appeared to be mad at me. Please help me, help him, & Amanda.

Hello,

The behavior your describe sounds like redirected aggression, and is not uncommon in cats.

It also sounds like Sammy is very territorial with regard to you, and his environment.

It would be a good idea to have Sammy evaluated by his vet, in person, as sometimes an underlying medical problem is related to the aggressive behavior. Once this has been ruled out, as hopefully, Sammy is healthy, you and your vet can begin to treat this as a behavioral problem, and you can see more about aggression and treatments, here:

Consulting with a feline behaviorist might also help in treating Sammy's aggression.

Your cats should benefit from a cat appeasing pheromone called Feliway/Comfort Zone for cats. It helps calm stressed/anxious cats and is used in a multitude of situations. You can find this product in major pet supply stores and online.

For the moment, I'd try my best to keep Sammy and Amanda separated, so he doesn't hurt her. Also, discuss with your vet, starting Sammy on a low dose, anti-anxiety medication, just for a short term, to see if this helps. I only believe in resorting to the use of this type of medication as a last resort. Clomicalm and Prozac have been used successfully in some cases with aggressive cats, so discuss these medications with your vet.

I hope all will be well.
