Question

I went away for 10 days and had a friend come and check on and feed her every other day or so. She stopped using the litter box to poop. She was fine on the days my friend came. I came home to poop on the floor and she pooped on the floor again after I have been home all day. How do I get her to start using the litter box again?

Hello,

You can use an enzymatic cleaner for organic stains/odors, to clean the areas where she defecates, so she doesn't smell it, and return to do it again. Here are some suggestions for products you will find in major pet supply stores and/or home improvement stores:

I also believe your cat was stressed by your absence, while you were away, so a cat appeasing pheromone called Feliway/Comfort Zone for Cats may help. It comes in both a spray and plug-in diffuser. The diffuser plugs into an electrical outlet like an air freshener, but has no scent to humans. For more information, please see:

Major pet supply stores carry Feliway, you can also order it online, and some vet offices carry it.

There's another product which I think may help you get your kitty back to using the litterbox--it's a clumping kitty litter called 'Cat Attract'--it contains herbal attractants which encourage use of the litterbox. It too, may be found in major pet supply stores.

It would be a good idea to have your cat evaluated by the vet, ASAP, to make sure there is no underlying medical problem causing her inappropriate elimination. If she gets a clean bill of health (hopefully), then you'll know her actions are purely behavioral.
