Info Request

Hi,

Is your cat male or female?

When your cat urinates, is his/her rear end completely inside the litterbox with the rear down (squatting), and the urine sprays outside of the box?

Does your cat seem to have any pain upon urination and/or do you notice any more frequency of urination?

What do you clean the urine with, outside the litterbox?

Thanks,
Cher

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: My cat is female. She has been a diabetic for several years and doing very well. She squats down inside the box which has high sides, which helps, but it still often goes up the edge and outside the box. I don't believe there's anypain involved. I clean it up with water and then some vinegar. Thank you.

Hello again, and thanks very much for your reply with additional information.

I too, have a diabetic cat (male), and I'm glad to hear your furry girl is doing well, I assume, on insulin.

One reason I can think of, which might cause what you describe, is either 'crystals', which have formed in her urine, causing a slight 'deposit' or obstruction in her urethra, forcing the urine to emerge, irregularly, around the deposits, or she may be very furry back there, and the urine is being deflected off her fur. Crystals are tiny, sand-like particles which form in urine that is not acidic enough.

It would be a good idea to have your cat's urine tested by the vet, to see if she has any crystals or other irregularities, and if you can collect the urine yourself, you shouldn't have to bring her into the office.

If you're able to safely trim away some of her fur from her backside area, you might see a change in this misdirected urine. Also, using vinegar was a great idea, but you can also use an enzymatic cleaner for organic stains/odors, like Nature's Miracle, or some of the other products named below, to clean the area thoroughly.

I hope this situation will improve, very soon, and your cat continues to do well.
