Question

My 20 year-old female DSH was diagnosed with lupus a couple of years ago. The symptoms are skin lesions. For 2 years prednisilone administered twice daily (at the maximum dose) controlled the symptoms. Now the drug is not working. Are there other treatments available and what are their side effects?

Hello, Momcat

Was she diagnosed with Systemic lupus or Discoid lupus?

Systematic lupus is when the body's immune system can attack any tissue in the body.

Discoid lupus effects the skin only?

Thank you. I just wanted to make sure.

There are several different treatments that can be used for this. The body will grow resistant to pred after so long. It happens to any one who takes it for long period of time.

A combination of niacinamide and tetracycline are commonly used for this condition. The side effects are mild which include vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss.

Maybe giving her time off the prednisone and using a treatment like this for while, will allow her to become less resistant to the prednisone and she can start using it again.

Using Vitamin E oral supplements and fatty acid supplements also helps the skin lesions too. Things like Omega 3 and 6 are good to use.

Sincerely, XXXXX
