Question

I am a landscape architect and enjoy building my own projects in my backyard in my spare time. I recently built a built-in barbeque island out of masonry and had concrete countertops installed. I stained the concrete countertops a couple of weeks ago after the 28 day curing period. I acid etched and cleaned the counter, applied a coat of primer and then stained the concrete with a Behr semi-transparent stain product. I wanted a non-uniform, blotchy look to the countertop so I attempted a spray on method. Although it was too messy and quickly fell into a brush and roller technique. It turned out okay, but unfortuneately it does not have the non-uniform/blotchy look that I was going for. It is very even and has a deep color almost like paint. I have not sealed it yet. At this point can I try to remove the stain with a stripper or a thinner and start over applying a lighter coat using a faux finish technique?

Since the stain is new it's going to be difficult to remove due to it soaking into the concrete, especially because you did the right thing and etched it. At this point you may want to consider re-etching it and going back over it with a complimenting color with a faux technique to give you the blotchy look. You may not be able to remove the stain, but you can introduce new stain over the top to give you your non-uniform appearance. This would probably be the easiest solution. If you truly want to remove the stain here are a few products that might do the trick:

Methylene Chloride: A good Epoxy emulsifier. Effective in removing new sealers. If using this product, you must wash the floor thoroughly before acid staining.
Citrus Peel: Manufactured by Dayton Superior Chemical Division- heavy duty concrete stripper and degreaser. (Flammable) 1-800-745-3707
