Question
I have a 2000 nissan frontier 4x4 4 cyl. I can get it to start but when i turn on my heat or a/c it dies and won't restart? I put in a new altenator, before the winter, because it was having problems. When i ran it it would be fine then the abs light and airbag light would come on and i'd have a slight loss of electrical power, and if i shut the truck off it would not restart without a jump. Do you have any idea what the problem would be? Also i've tried using different batteries with no avail.

Hello, when you say 'new alternator' where was it purchased? Most times, alternators are rebuilt and require a 'core' return (old one). It is not uncommon for a rebuilt alternator to be faulty. From the symptoms you've described, I would recommend having your charging system checked for both voltage and amperage output. Voltage output should be around 13.5v-14.2v (average) and amperage output on your vehicle should be around 80A-120A. Also, check your alternator drive belt for proper tension as this may also contribute to insufficient charging.
Hope this helps and good luck. Feel free to reply with any questions.

I bought the alt. online but it was new not a rebuilt one. The belt is also on correct, could it be the wiring connected to the battery on the negative side? I heard this could cause the bettery not to charge but I still would be able to start the truck if the battery was charged.

Hello, the wiring on the alternator and battery are very important. Sometimes a loose connection or corroded terminal may contribute to your condition. Try checking both positive and negative battery terminals for any corrosion and for tightness. Corrosion can be identified by a whitish greenish powdery substance around the terminals. If there is any, warm water will remove the corrosion safely.
Were the connections behind the new alternator identical to the old one? Double check the connections behind the alternator as well, both for polarity and tightness. Let me know, thanks.
