Question

My 1993 subaru legacy has a remote starter/car alarm and recently i've been having issues where the car will not start at all unless i push the remote starter button. Also, after I run it and then park it the car will not start immediately I have to wait for approx 15-20 min & then try it and even then it doesnt typically start by the key - again I have to use the starter. I've had my mechanic go through it w/another mechanic familiar w/Subarus & the starter was changed - this is its 3rd. But I don''t believe its the starter at all - supposedly the alternator was checked, etc and no one can find out why it wont start (sometimes I have to have it jumped); why I have to use the starter at times and other times I can start it w/the key ; and why the interior lights dim and my hazards create a subtle blinking effect from all the lights. Additl info that may help is there is a non stock radio that appears to be installed incorrectly. Any thoughts as to where I should start to fix this car? Should I bring it to someone thats familiar w/electrical issues? Is it the alternator? Not sure where to begin and afraid its a lot of money.

If it was me the first thing that i would do is to remove the remote starting system, unless it is factory. which i am sure it probably isn't because it is a 93. I would guess there is probably something wrong with the remote starter, or it is installed wrong. It sounds like for some reason the remote starter is leaving the ignition in the on position and probably draining the battery sometimes. That may also be why it won't start with the key. If you really want to have a remote starter, i would take it someplace that installs them all the time, and put in a brand name remote starter in like viper.

Thanks and good luck! i hope this helped

thank you ...Thank you ! I brought my car to a remote starter location who professionally installs them and after testing the older system, he found that the relay was constantly on and draining the battery and also why I heard clicking and the lights were dimming, etc. Its been fixed for a wk now and the car is perfect - the mechanic stated you were dead on and so was I in what I thought. I'm glad I had you to back my theory when I went to them.
