Question

Hello, I have a 7 year old German Shepherd. We originally lived in the state of Washington, and have moved to Arizona. Since we bought a pool (it is salt water) he swims every summer. This really helps him deal with the pool. However, he is getting a red rash under his arms and groin area and it is hot to the touch. I took his temperature and it is normal. Is this due to him constantly being wet? Thank you for your help.

Hi,
Yes you are correct, this is an infection of either bacteria or yeast due to the wet area from swimming.
They can turn into really nasty "hot spots" very quickly.
You can help by rinsing him off when he comes out and drying the areas. In addition, you can alternate neosporin and hydrocortisone on the area. This will help dry the areas and will combat the inflamation and the bacteria. If you have a vet, the best thing is to ask for Gentocin Spray which is a combination of drugs that really is specifically formulated for this problem and works VERY well. (All my dogs swim ( I also have a German Shepard ) and I keep three bottles in the house for fear I will run out during the summer!) I hope this helps you help him.
