Question

I think my rottweiller got stung by something yesterday. I noticed last night she was pawing at her left eye. When I went to inspect it there is about a 1mm pink mucous looking spot and she has rubbed a little hair off above the eye from scratching and pawing at it. I gave her 5ml of benedryl as I know this is less than the maximum for her 120lb weight and safe. Other than the benedryl is there anything I can do to help this until monday when I can get into the vet''s office.

Accepted Answer

OW!! Insect bites can be painful ... especially around the eye!! Cool compresses can help with both the swelling and the pain. It is also perfectly acceptable to repeat your Benedryl administration up to 3 times daily if needed. I am also going to recommend that you purchase a boric acid eye wash (either from your pharmacist or it is also carried by many grocery stores) and flush her eye thoroughly. Boric acid is a human eye wash solution that is safe in dogs as well. If she seems exceptionally painful, you might also try keeping her in dim lighting. Sometimes bright lights can be painful when dealing with eye injuries. I really hope she feels better soon!!
