Question

I have 2 pekes one was 10yrs & the other 3yrs at the time we moved into this mobile a year ago. My 3yr old developed a slight rash and then ended up with massive hair loss from her front shoulders back...I have had her to the vet here (it's a rural area andour choice is limited); she has been treated with: cortisone-prednisone-benadryl and T- shampoo to no avail. I live on a very low fixed income so she has had to live in misery & pain for a long time now. HELP,HELP, PLEASE.....

Answer

Sounds like your dog might be suffering some sort of allergic reaction to the new home. If this started after your move, and only specifically after the move, I suggest you find a vet somewhere in your area and bring her in for an allergy test panel. This is a test that most vets will send away to a lab and they'll be able to figure out exactly what your dog is allergic to. Of course, that's not to say that she doesn't have some sort of other under-lying health issue that your vet hasn't been able to narrow down yet. If she is in pain or if the rash seems to be bothering her, you can try using an oatmeal based shampoo on her. The oatmeal seems to have a cooling/comforting effect on skin issues and it might be enough to keep her comfortable for a little while. The oatmeal shampoo can be found at any petstore or places like WalMart, Target, ect.

I have already usaed about a gallon of this shampoo which has not helped and the local vetr says its an allergy and to bring her in for the cort shots every week to 10 days (yeah right, at $45.00 per visit). Thank you anyway.

Answer

I understand your concern about the cost, however if you were to suggest the allergy panel to your vet, then perhaps he could narrow down exactly what your dog is allergic to. It could be something as simple as the type of dog food you're feeding her, or it might be something big like the carpeting in the mobile. Please don't get discouraged. I'm going to do a little more research (I have an alternative medicine vet that I'll be seeing on Monday) and see if there's something like tea tree oil that you can use on your girl. Don't give up just yet!!

I'm sorry, the panel was reccommended and I was mad to feel like a complete idiot who paniced over nothing;after all he "is the doctor not me or I would not be there".... And I HAVE ALL BUT GIVEN ALL HOPE OF EVER GETTING ANY HELP FOR HER...Infaact I am considering giviing her up do to this except I am disabled and my little girls are all I have in this world

Answer

Like I said, I'm going to talk to my alternative medicine gal and see if she has any suggestions, but going with the panel isn't a bad idea. I'm sorry that the vet you saw was inconsiderate to you. Is there another one anywhere in your area that might have a better bedside manner?
