Question

My girlfriend started drinking at 12 or 13 years old. When I met her at 22 she was drinking at least 2 or 3 times a night and was always the most drunk no matter how many people were around. I was only 22 also so didn't take much notice. At about 24 I started to grow up, but she still kept drinking and drank consistantly 2 times a week or more. I am now 28 yrs old and barely drink at all. We live together and are talking about marriage, but since we moved into our hourse she has been dunk every fri and sat for 8 straight months. 32 weekend! This past saturday I found her unconscious on our couch and the lights were on all through the house and in the car. Her mom drinks just as much as she does and she swears she works with people that drink as much as her and are the same age. Is it just me? Is this normal or a problem? How much drinking is normal? is she an alcohalic?

Hello

Sounds to me she has a problem. One way to know is to ask her to quit. If she can't, or won't, that is a red flag. She will have to help herself. She has to want to change. What you can do to help her most is to find an alanon meeting. This is for YOU. There you will meet people who love people who drink too much. You will be given support and tips on how to help her. This is the best thing for you right now.

Thanks. I asked her quit or at least slow down immensly for about 4 years now. I had her go to a meeting, but she didn't like it. She slows down for a few weeks when i really get on her and threaten to leave her, but as soon as I let up she goes right back! I really don't know what to do. What is normal alcohal consumption? Am I just a party pooper? Do normal people drink 2 days a week? After this I will gladly accept your answer. thanks for your insight.

Answer

hello

Normal people do not drink until they pass out. Normal people wouldn't want to. The key here is when you say she slows down. She may be physically addicted and may not be able to stop on her own without treatment. Please get yourself to an alanon meeting. It will help both of you! I promise you won't be sorry.
