hi there. i think thats the same engine as in the audi's i work on.- known as a " Pumper Diesel " if you can get on ok with the garage techys ask them to check the following.
ask them to plug in VAS machnine and got to fuel system measure value blocks 23 for all 4 cylinders. the readings they see - should all be mid 20's to mid 30's . if they see the figures at around 60 - the injector seals are just starting to go. if they see them at 90 - or 110 - they are definately shot !
take the fuel filter off - and poor it into a clear cup or bottle. if it is black or much darker in colour than clean diesel then u have a fault with the injector seals which is caused by the tandem fuel pump ( bolted on the back of the engine ) which has been cross contaminated by oil internally.
replace the injectors seals as at least the minimum repair. they come as a kit for each injector - 2 seals.
when they refit the injectors - tell them not to fit them back into the original cylinders. this well help create a new fresh seal for each injector.
i would advise changing the tandem pump also.
and - this is more bad news im afraid - but ask them to take out the pump in the fuel tank - and inspect this unit and the tank. - they may well find that the fuel tank is black - this is carbon and oil deposits - that have been dumped in the tank - after doing a circuit from the tandem pump. - minimum would be clean the unit and the tank. - ultimate would be replace the pump - but u may well get away with just a clean out.
and the last thing - replace the fuel filter for sure !
- try it out - - you could check the fuel filter yourself - as a guide.
if it helps - let me know - and i hope all goes well.
