Hi, I am hearing rattling and clunking noises on the driver''s side of my car. The noise is near the front of the car. I hear the noise especially when I go over potholes or bumbs in the road. I have taken it to a mechanic and they say they can''t find anything wrong. What is possibly the problem with my car?

If the mechanic could not find the problem the most likely cause would be the strut mounts. There are a few other problems that could cause this noise but a good mechanic should not have a problem finding them, but I would be sure to have the sway bar links, lower control are bushings, and tie rods checked and if all of these are ok then I would have the struts and mounts replaced.

The sway bar goes from one lower control arm to the other and there is a sway bar link that connects the sway bar to the control arm, the links often go bad or break. Pic below to show control arm bushings that go bad.

Are any of these problems very expensive to repair?

The lower control arms can run around $150.00 for each side and the struts and mounts can be around $300.00 each side, the sway bar links are around $20.00 for each side.
