Question

my granddaughter at age 17 was driving a friends car, the friend was 20 they stopped along the road to look for something in the car and the friend threw out some trash( a couple empty water bottles and a couple papers.) one of these papers was a deposit slip that belonged to my granddaughter. It was found the next day by the person living near by. he called her at work and said things about how he could get in her bank account and so forth.. It ended up he turned her in for littering. This had to be taken to court. She had no previous record, she recieved a $50 fine 20 hours community work and 90 days probation. We thought this was rather much. Would it be to any advantage to appeal. She has since turned 18.

nothing thought it would be better to pay the fine and let it go.

Answer

Hi,

It does sound harsh. I guess she did not have a lawyer who might have negotiated a better plea. But there is really no basis to appeal at this time. A thought: does the DA know about the threat the man made? Do you know who the man is? Maybe the DA would be interested in investigating.
