Question

My questions is about the HSV-1 virus. I have had what I believe is a cold sore all my life, however, when I get a cold my lip usually itches in one area and that's all it ever does. I have never experienced a blister before or a bump or anything, but I don't see what else it could be. I perfomed oral sex on my bf when my lip itched just a little bit, now I am highly concerned that I have exposed him to HSV-1. What are the chances that I should be concerned?

Answer

Hi Jaime,

Transmitting herpes simplex to the genital through oral sex is unlikely if your partner's immune system has already been exposed to HSV1, thus already has antibodies to this virus, so when encountered again will launch an attack against the virus. Somewhere between 50 and 90% of all Americans have antibodies against HSV1 as it is so common in our environment.

However, for someone who has never had herpes cold sores before, infection with HSV1 through oral sex can result in a true primary episode of genital herpes.

In your case, without an active lesion and viral shedding, it is extremely unlikely that you infected your boyfriend. The virus lives best in warm, moist places, not on the skin.

Hopefully this information is helpful. I really think your boyfriend is safe. Please remember to click accept if the service I provided you was satisfactory. Positive feedback and bonuses are always greatly appreciated as well. Thank you.
