Question

I have a 13 week old female kitten. She is apparently healthy, however after using the litter I usually find a small drop of blood on the floor near the litter pan. It is smaller than the a dime and in not after every trip to the litter pan. She eats and drinks without a problem and is completely litter trained. She is active and playful. She is not sensitive to the touch anywhere in her abdomen or pelvic area. What could be causing the bleeding?

Info Request

Hi Laura,

Has she been wormed?

Does the blood come from her anus or vagina?

Thanks,

Terri

I don't think she has been wormed. I got her from a home with several other cats and several other dogs. It is difficult to tell were the blood is coming from, however her anus does not always appear clean after a BM. If I has to guess I would say from her anus.

I also forgot to mention, if it makes a difference. They were feeding her adult cat food when she was weaned from her momma. I switched her to Iams kitten food when I brought her home but she does every now and then get into my adult cats Iams.

Dear Laura,

Blood in a young kittens stool is almost always related to a parasite. It can be a GI upset from the food change too.

Worms,coccidia, giardia:

Giardia http://marvistavet.com/html/giardia.html

It could also be from ingesting a sharp non food item but that is less likely since she is eating and happy.

The best thing to do is take a stool sample to your vet.

I hope it is nothing and your baby will be fine. Please let me know how she is,

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
