Answer

Thanks for the question.

I have thought about this and I think it is very unlikely that there will be any connection between your dog's rash on the genitals and him vomiting so I will answer your question in two stages.

1. Vomiting: Vomiting in the dog is very common but what do we do about it? If your dog has been vomiting for a day only and is otherwise bright and happy you could put him on small frequent meals of a bland nature, say chicken, fish, rice, scrambled egg etc. and see if he improves. Most vomiting in the dog is dietary in nature and will resolve on its own anyway. However if the vomiting continues for longer or your dog becomes depressed, lethargic or in pain you should seek veterinary advice.
More serious causes of vomiting could include swallowing stuff like stones and plastic kid's toys, infections, poisonings, gastric ulceration etc.

2. Rash on the genital area. Again minor rashes round the genital area are common particularly on the testicles, these skin infections are usually nothing to worry about but they can make your dog itchy. If he is otherwise fit and healthy [ once the vomiting is under control ] you can try some human skin cream. You would not do any harm using a product containing 0.5% or 1% hydrocortisone if you can get it over the counter. Apply this twice a day for 5 days and again if it gets dramatically worse or if it is no better in 5 days seek veterinary advice. More difficult skin conditions to treat would include ringworm, mange, and generalised skin allergies.

If I can help further do not hesitate to get in touch ...

we are also in the process of changing him from puppy food to adult food but he is only almost 8 months old and that's what i'm worried about

Thanks for the further question,

A change in diet in a young dog could possibly be the trigger factor for an episode of vomiting. I am sure you would do this anyway but make any changes in diet very gradually over a minimum of a four day period. Dogs in general have quite weak stomachs ...

If he recovers on the bland diet I suggested and you then get another episode consider trying a different adult dog food.

As long as your dog is bright, happy and playful and wanting to eat you probably have nothing to worry about, just a dietary gastritis ...

But beware if it goes on longer, I have been caught out a few times in my professional life with young dog which are vomiting, I thought it was a dietary gastritis and it was in fact a large stone in the stomach!

Regards,

Scott
