Question

I'm running Vista on my Lenovo R61i. Recently Firefox and IE have been crashing if they're open for any longer than 20 minutes. I'm running a low number of problems on the system tray so I don't believe it to be a RAM issue. Any proposed solutions to this vexing problem?

Thank you very much for your response.

In terms of "crash," I'll get a message that says "Firefox is not responding" or "IE is no longer responding" then it will give the option to close or wait for it to start responding again.

I know that this is symptom of a problem could have be sourced in a number of different of computer ailments so I appreciate your willingness to help.

ConfidentalLaw,

What it sounds like is that your system is timing out or your connection is dropping. What type of Internet connection do you have? (Dial-up, DSL, cable, satellite...)

Is it a direct connection or a connection through a network?

Is it wireless or ethernet?

Kate

I'm sorry, I represented my answer incorrectly. When I say not responding, the browser actually freezes and a window pops-up saying that IE or Firefox is no longer responding. Connectivity is fine.

I have had this very problem. Though connectivity SEEMS fine, it is almost always a connectivity issue. Even if it isn't, knowing the connection information may help in some way.

Thanks!

ConfidentalLaw,

Thank you.

Are you running any searchbar applications?

Is your network a home network?

Do you open many tabs on your browsers at one time and/or run multiple browser launches at once?

Home network, yes.

Many tabs, yes.

Many Searchbar applications, yes.

I usually crash when I'm running multiple tabs in IE/Firefox. Perhaps I lack sufficient RAM.

OK. That's useful.

Are you running anti-virus software? If so, which?

How much RAM is in your computer?

Answer

I'm a nightowl... I'll be up for another hour or so.

I'm going to assume your connection is good, so the next likely culprit is a virus or spyware. I'm going to advise you to do some basic computer maintenance:

First, run clean-up it's under ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>Disk Cleanup

Run the FREE Dr.Web CureIt!® Utility http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/ followed by Free Super Anti Spyware http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogspot.com/2007/04/superantispyware-home-edition-free.html

Then, make sure that all your Windows updates are current. (Run Windows Update.)

Install AVG Free

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?cdlPid=10834624

AFTER all of that, see if you still have the problem.

Please let me know. I will try to continue to troubleshoot or I will find another Expert to help if we get stuck.

Tried all of the above. Still crashing. Likely a RAM issue, would be your estimation?

Accepted Answer

Could be. If you'd like to check, launch the Task Manager (ctr+alt+del) to the PERFORMANCE tab, Under Options check Always on top.

You can monitor your CPU and Memory on the fly. I really recommend that anyone running Vista have 2GB memory minimum. My system hovers around 1.2GB memory usage when I'm online. I run the gadgets and a few other background programs as well as many open windows at once.

Let me know if this IS the problem once you've viewed, would you?

Even it if hasn't solved this issue, DO keep your Windows up to date and keep an anti-virus installed on your program. When you have an opportunity, do a full-backup of your system so you are covered in case of a problem. You'll save yourself a lot of grief this way.
