Answer

Hello,

Error 1304 usually means that you do not have the proper access level on the system. What you should try to do is right-click the icon to install Acrobat and select Run as Administrator.

Please try installing it then. If it doesn't work, report back to me and I'll give you a few more things to try.

I assume you also previously checked to see if your hard drive was full, correct?

Answer

One more quick thing you may want to try is to run the program for compatibility with Windows XP. To do so, right-click the file and go to Properties. Then under the Compatibility tab, be sure to select to run it for Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

Try it again after that and let me know how it goes.

I'm sorry to have to ask you this, but the errors I'm seeing aren't exactly the same even though they're all listed as 1304 for Adobe. Could you please provide me with the actual error message you're receiving so that I can check into things a bit further?

This is the exact message.

Error 1304,Error writhng to file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory.

Are you installing from a CD or from a downloaded installer package?

550 days and 8 hours ago.

Reply

Both I downloaded the file then burned it to a CD to save the file, I tried installing from the CD and that did not work so I tried installing from the downloaded file. I redownloaded the file and tried the install form the file again, I downloaded again using Reget and got the same results.

I do not have a purchased CD.

Answer

Please try following the information given in the following knowledgebase article on Adobe's site. The information is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 for the mostpart, so you may need to do the equivalents in Vista.

If none of these things help, let me know.

Reply

I have already tried that one, I could not find the equivalent in Vista.

Unfortunately, I can't find any more information on this error or what could be causing it. What I'm going to do at this point is opt out and see if another expert can help you with your problem. I apologize for not being able to help, but do hope you get this solved soon.

Thank You, don't feel bad I have been looking for this for a week now. I have found info that says Adobe has known about this since Feb 08 and has a fix. When I called Adobe I went thru 3 levels of there tech support, they said they tell me how to fix the problem but want $49.

Answer

I'll take a stab at this and try to help.
Have you tried going to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\ yourself and seeing if you can create/delete files in this folder.
Also is the file
AcroIEHelper.dll there? If so try deleting it and see if you can now install, perhaps the permissions on that one file have been corrupt somehow...

Reply

I cannot create/delete files and the AcroEIHelper.dll file is not there, instead there is a AcroPDF.dll file.

Reply to Trevor Stuart's Post: As I said I already tied your suggestions, however your reading your reply I started going over the there things again and I started thinking more about why the file did not exist. I installed Adobe Reader 8 to see it the Reader contained the missing file, it did, I tried the install again and it worked this time. Since it was your question that started me on the train of thought that solved the problem. I would say you get the money. What do I do to get you paid?

Accepted Answer

just accept the answer, and I will get paid... I'm very happy it worked out for you!!!
