Hi Kd,
Do you have a budget to pay a lawyer?
Do you have a website?
Have you tried submitting your music to labels?
Have you considered hiring a manager or a publicist?
Thank you for that additional info Kd. Here are some issues for you to think about.
A lawyer or a manager is not going to work with you unless they have faith in your music (or they just want to take your money). The music industry is saturated with groups that want to make it to the next level, some good, some not so good, some outstanding. I have found that everyone is 'the man' in their own hood, because friends and family cannot be objective when it comes to people they care about. So what I suggest new groups to is to widen their scope. Do shows in your town, do shows in the towns around you. Go to as many shows as you can, pass out copies of your cds and give out tons and tons of business cards. Create a webpage, if you can't create a webpage, create a myspace, a place where you can showcase your music and get peoples opinions on your music. You can start a blog (http://www.blogspot.com/) that is like an online diary, and talk about the things you are doing every day to move the group forward. The more you can get your name out there, the more people will take notice of who you are and what you're doing. The more you can get your name out there online, it increases your chances of being asked to work with other artists, get licensing deals, and maybe even get a manager or get signed.
This is not to say that you shouldnt get a lawyer or a manager, but you want someone who believes in the group and is going to hustle for the group. A family member can sometimes make a good manager, the issue becomes whether or not they have the experience or skill to really help.
Keeping in mind, there's rap and rapping.....raping is a whole different meaning, and something you don't want to associate yourself with. There are many many sites online that you can create an account and upload your music to. Some you can let people download for free, some they can just listen to, some people can purchase the music.
One referral I can give you is Maury Winkler, you can give him a call and ask what he recommends. His number is XXX-XXX-XXXX
